A. ABOUT OUR GREEK ORTHODOX NAMEDAYS SITE

The present site is an effort by a group of Orthodox Christians living in Thessaloniki, Greece, ecclesiastically belonging to the Church of Greece with Archbishop His Beatitude Hieronymos II.

It is a project compiled and serviced during our free time. We do not have any active bussiness affiliation to any Christian organization but we were baptized to Orthodox Christianity since our birth. We are also very fond of Mount Athos which is the ark of Orthodox Christianity.

According to the Greek Orthodox tradition, every day of the year is dedicated to a Christian Saint or Martyr. When someone is named after one of those Saints, that day becomes their "name day" and, traditionally, is celebrated.

The mentioned dates here are of the Gregorian Calendar which is followed globaly including Greece. To see a celebration date in the Old calendar (Julian), subtract 13 days from the dates mentioned here.

The present Greek Orthodox nameday portal includes more than 3800 Greek first (given) names and is the most complete namedays database on the internet today. From these 3800 names :
Soon in a separate database we will be adding 28000 more names as they have been researched by scholars at the University of Oxford.

We are investigating the fact of expanding our site to also include name days from other Orthodox Churches except the Greek one. This task is difficult since the name day of a name must belong to a Saint or Martyr of the Orthodox religion and at the moment we only know the Saints of the Greek Orthodox Church. Thus we wish to locate people from other Orthodox Churches (ie Russian, Romanian, Armenian etc) that do know details of established (canonized) Orthodox Saints in order to incorporate them to a Pan-Orthodox Synaxarium.

Please note that all Saints that were established (canonized) as Saints before the year 1054 AD are common Saints between the Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Christianity. But after 1054 AD there was the scism in Christianity. From then on the paths are different and the same unfortunate ending applies to the Saints that were canonized after 1054 AD. B. EXPLANATION ON NOTATIONS

We have included all names with capital letters and also with lower case letters in order to ease the search of namedays and indexing.

The notation (*) next to name means that the nameday has a different celebration date each year. These namedays are called "movable namedays" and are connected to the Greek Orthodox Easter date.

If you want to see the online calculation of Greek Orthodox Easter and all movable namedays click here.

The notation (1), (2), (3) etc next to some names, shows that for the same name there are also namedays at other dates. It DOES NOT have any relation to the hierarchy of the Saints.

For the names that their nameday is not yet known, we mention them as "not known". Their celebation date is on "All Saints day" which is a movable nameday. For every year, this date can be found here.
